Student Advocacy Experience

Student Representative on the
College of Arts and Sciences Academic Council

  • I have served as a student representative on Academic Council since September of 2020.

  • I advocate for Willamette students’ interests—taking into account issues of equity and the unique challenges this year has presented—during deliberation and votes on academic policies, programs, and standards.

    • For example, I advocated strongly for and voted on extending the credit/no credit deadline for fall semester in light of the pandemic, wildfires, and numerous other adversities students faced.

  • As a student representative on Academic Council, I have learned about university governance, policies, and structures and how they shape the student experience.

  • As ASWU President, I will draw on this experience to make these processes more accessible and transparent to students through consistent communication and through my appointments to different university committees.

ASWU Senator for the Class of 2022

  • I have had the honor of serving the Class of 2022 as an ASWU Senator this school year.

  • During my time as an ASWU Senator, I have taken part in important discussions including anti-racism, the university's response to the ice storm, helping the Bistro through these economically tough times, and other issues that impact the student body.

  • As my caucus's delegate, I was a part of the work group that put together a draft of anti-racism goals.

    • Drawing on my lived experience as a Latino and seeking input from other students, I worked hard to ensure the goals in the working document would represent the student body and our values.

  • My sincerely held belief of the importance of student engagement in processes like these motivated me to lead an effort by my caucus to ensure all Senator positions were filled by a student. Because of this effort, the Class of 2022 now has a full caucus of five Senators committed to advocating for and representing the interests.

  • As ASWU President, I will continue to encourage student involvement on important issues like anti-racism and emergency preparedness.

Resident Advisor

  • Alongside more than 30 dedicated resident advisors, I work hard to foster a safe and inclusive community for all on-campus student residents.

  • As a residential campus with a 2-year on-campus living requirement, a student's housing experience is a crucial part of their college experience.

Organizer of National Voter Registration Day 2019 at

Willamette University

  • I planned and organized a nonpartisan effort to register people to vote on Willamette University’s campus during National Voter Registration Day in 2019.

  • I worked with Next Up (a political nonprofit based in Portland) to secure funding for this event and trained student volunteers on how to register people to vote.

  • The work of ASWU should not be limited to campus. Where appropriate, I will work with different student organizations to develop relationships with the greater Salem community.
